Down syndrome is a human chromosomal variation affecting the 21st chromosome.
Having Down syndrome does not define a person, but it certainly plays a big role in who they are. Many things "typical" people take for granted such as walking, talking, eating, catching a ball, telling time are made difficult for people who have this extra chromosome. Not impossible, but difficult.
They require more help and time (sometimes years) to achieve the same goals as someone without the extra chromosome. This help often comes in the way of expensive therapy; therapy that parents are quite often left on their own to access and pay for.
The Fraser Valley Down syndrome Society helps families in the Fraser Valley connect with each other, find resources, provides workshops, offers therapy classes, and helps to subsidize approved therapies for families.
The Fraser Valley Down Syndrome Society (FVDSS) is a parent-run support group based in Abbotsford for families of persons with Down syndrome in the Aldergrove to Hope areas.
Our Parent Evenings are held on the Second Thursday of each month Sept. - June in Abbotsford, B.C. We sometimes have guest speakers at these evenings, and our Lending Library is always available during this time.
As well as our Parent Evenings, we organize family events to foster friendships between the people with Down syndrome, their siblings, and their parents.
In our New Parent Visiting program we welcome new families who are expecting or have just welcomed a child with Down syndrome into their lives, provide them with information and offer support.
If you are interested in being a part of our society, meeting other parents, and receiving email updates, then please Become a Member…
